GEICO auto insurance seems to be a major rip-off

I am one of those people who just pays my insurance bills as they come in. I tend to stay with companies and not take the time to comparison shop. But this year was different. I have had my auto-insurance with GEICO for the last 17 years. It seemed it always inched up with each six-month billing. But I just accepted that. This year it just seemed ridiculous. I began to look at other insurance companies and one offered me insurance at nearly $500 less a year than GEICO.

I called GEICO and asked to speak to an agent. I told them I had gotten this offer. The agent asked me a few questions and looked at my policy and told me GEICO ‘may’ have a way to lower my insurance rate. I was surprised but pleased and asked how they would do that. She proceeded to list a number of things and then said I would have to give GEICO permission to look at my credit rating and insurance rating, and they would get back to me. I asked why they would need my credit rating as they had my insurance for 17 years and knew it was always paid on-time and they also knew what my driving record was. I asked what was included in their insurance rating, what were they looking for? After the agent said she couldn’t tell me, and getting the same answer from her manager who she at first didn’t want to connect me too, I wrote to Mr. Combs, President of GEICO.

After some time I got a call from someone who said they would be happy to answer any questions. I again explained I had gotten this offer for insurance at nearly $500 less a year and wanted to know if GEICO could lower my rate. She went through the same spiel the first agent did. I then asked her to please explain what they were looking for with my credit rating and their insurance rating, and what that was? I also asked her if I gave GEICO permission to access my information, how much could I ‘potentially’ save on my insurance. After much back and forth she said she couldn’t tell me what they were looking for, that was a GEICO secret, and she could also not tell me what the ‘potential’ savings would be.

So needless to say, I have now moved my insurance away from GEICO. Not only is my new insurance much less expensive, but it is much better insurance. As an example, with GEICO my coverage for bodily injury liability was $300,000/$500,000. With the new insurance it is $500,000/$1,000,000. Each insured area was better than it was with my GEICO insurance.

Based on my experience I would urge everyone who has GEICO auto insurance to take a look at your bills, and do some comparison shopping. You may find, like I did, that GEICO seems to have become a major rip-off
